We embarked on a project to provide a permanent solution to the water insulation problems experienced at the Kandilli and Sütlüce campuses of Fatih Sultan Mehmet University. Water leaks in the buildings of this historical and important institution were causing both structural damage and negatively affecting the educational environment. Our aim was to implement a long-lasting, aesthetic, and high-performance insulation system. At the beginning of the project, we conducted a detailed examination of the existing ceramic surfaces. We observed that the ceramics, which had deteriorated and cracked over time, were causing water leakage. Therefore, as a first step, we carefully repaired the broken and damaged ceramics. To increase the roughness of the surface and ensure better adhesion of the primer, we removed the gloss by grinding the ceramic surface with a diamond-tipped light grinding machine. This process prepared an excellent base for the subsequent stages. Then, we applied Epoxy Primer to the surface. The Epoxy Primer filled the pores of the surface, creating both a waterproof barrier and ensuring that the Polyurea coating adhered more strongly to the surface. The reason for choosing Epoxy is its excellent adhesion property and chemical resistance. After the Epoxy primer application, it was time for the application of Pure Polyurea, which is the lifeblood of the project. With special equipment and experienced applicators, we sprayed 2mm thick Pure Polyurea onto the surface. Polyurea was an ideal insulation material due to its incredible elasticity, rapid curing property, and absolute impermeability to water. In particular, its resistance to movements and vibrations caused by the intense use of university buildings made Polyurea indispensable. Finally, we applied Aliphatic Paint on top of the Polyurea coating. Thanks to its excellent resistance to UV rays, aliphatic paint protected the Polyurea from the harmful effects of the sun and extended the life of the coating. In addition, it contributed to the overall appearance of the university buildings by providing an aesthetic look. Thanks to this project, we have provided a permanent solution to the water insulation problems at the Kandilli and Sütlüce campuses of Fatih Sultan Mehmet University. Now, students and faculty members will be able to continue their education in a healthier and more comfortable environment without water leaks.
