In this project, where we set out to ensure the safety of energy for CK Bogazici Electricity, we undertook the insulation of chemical storage areas covering 1000 square meters. Our aim was to prevent aggressive chemicals used in the power plant, especially acids, bases, and inhibitors, from harming the environment and to create a safe storage environment. In such a sensitive task, material selection and application processes were of vital importance. As a first step, we started by preparing the existing concrete surface. We used a diamond-tipped hand grinder to remove all dirt, dust, and loose particles from the surface. This process was critical to ensure that the epoxy primer adhered perfectly to the concrete. Then, we applied the epoxy primer. The epoxy primer filled the pores of the surface, both leveling the surface and creating an ideal base for the pure polyurea coating. In our selection of epoxy primer, we prioritized high adhesion strength and chemical resistance. In the second stage, a 2 mm thick pure polyurea coating, which undertook the main insulation task, was applied. Pure polyurea was an ideal choice for this project due to its excellent chemical resistance, high elasticity, and fast curing properties. Its resistance to chemicals provided long-lasting protection, while its elasticity provided resistance to cracks that may occur due to the expansion and contraction of the concrete. The fast curing property of polyurea greatly contributed to the timely completion of the project. Finally, we applied aliphatic paint on top of the polyurea coating. Aliphatic paint was chosen because it exhibits excellent resistance to UV rays. This prevented the polyurea coating from fading and deteriorating, ensuring that the insulation remained effective for many years. In addition, aliphatic paint gave the surface an aesthetic appearance, making the working environment safer and more organized. Throughout the project, we worked meticulously at every stage, carefully planning every detail from material selection to application techniques. As a result, we created a long-lasting and safe storage area that completely eliminated the risk of chemical leakage. This project was not only a technical success, but also an indication of the importance we attach to the environment and human health.
