Ankara Metropolitan Municipality's solid waste water treatment plants play a critical role in protecting our city's sustainability and a healthy environment. However, ensuring the impermeability of the structures is vital for these facilities to operate continuously and efficiently. This is where the Köster NB System application came into play. Our goal was to completely isolate all critical areas from the sedimentation tanks to the sludge storage pools against water, preventing potential leaks and structural damage. The heart of our project was Köster NB System's crystalline waterproofing mortar. The most important reason for choosing this mortar was that it reacts with the chemicals in the concrete structure to form insoluble crystals, thus making the concrete waterproof from the inside out. This material, which works like a 'concrete magician', also proved its reliability with its CE certificate in EN 1504-2 standard. Our application process started with meticulous preparation. The first step was to clean and smooth the surfaces. Then, we prepared the Köster NB System mortar in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The consistency and application technique of the mortar were critical to the success of the waterproofing. We carefully applied the prepared mortar, starting from the inner surfaces of the sedimentation tanks, to the circular sedimentation pools, sludge thickening tanks, and finally to the sludge storage pools. We applied multiple layers, following the required drying time for each layer. In this way, we achieved maximum protection by providing negative and positive side water insulation. At the end of the project, the critical areas of the water treatment plants were fully protected against water. Thanks to the Köster NB System, the lifespan of the facilities has been extended, while maintenance costs have also been significantly reduced. This investment by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality is an important step taken for a sustainable future for our city. Now, we can continue to work for a clean and healthy environment in our facilities with peace of mind.
